Originally called "The Atomic Age Suite," these 10 small paintings were Stowitts' last completed work before his death in 1953. Painted 1950-1952, they depict what might be more clearly understood as modern "Mandalas of the Hidden Wisdom." Using the Theosophical writings of Alice A. Bailey, the Platonic philosophy of Sacred Geometry and the framework of Esoteric Astrology (a radically different interpretation than the popular conception) as his bases, Stowitts created these images to represent various states of individual Consciousness, in terms both scientific and sacred.
Divided into
3 Trios and a Reprise, these painted windows, a la stained glass, look
out into the Great Mystery of Time-Space-Consciousness through a metaphysical
lens. They portray the energetic dances each of us will make, in his or her
way, as we evolve our spiritual states of Being.
Unfortunately,
the viewer cannot truly appreciate the vitality of these paintings unless
he or she is standing in their presence. Two-dimensional images cannot encode
Stowitts' magical use of gold-, silver- and copper-metallic paint to burnish
the interweaving lines of colorful geometry. Not even the best film could
capture each image's visual changes when viewed in a rheo-static light: flames
of fire animate one canvas, spirals of energy spin on another. Previously
unnoticed visual elements are brought forward and simultaneously hidden.
Most importantly, their spectrumatic, enlivened geometry impacts
the viewer's retina and produces perceptible changes in Consciousness.
As guest curator, I witnessed hundreds of visitors to this exhibition enter the lobby, interested but rushed, end up spending an hour or more in the Mandalas' gallery, having postponed their busy lists to linger and absorb these paintings' transformational power. Since a computer screen cannot truly replicate their spectral magic, however, both your effort and Stowitts' to engender a deeper understanding of God and Science and "the I-ness inside Us" is diminished by these less-than-optimum, pixelized reproductions.
But don't let that stop you. The wonder of these images is clearly
apparent, even if invisibly "dulled" on your screen. Each conveys a treasure,
a mystery and an understanding that, when fully realized, when fully embodied
in our cells and our selves and our collective Loving Will, will make of
humanity and our earthly life a finer manifestation of the Divine Flame
within All That Is.
For any fuller explication of the paintings and their depicted universe, please refer to our accompanying catalogue . Mandalas of the Hidden Wisdom is a perfect-bound softcover with full-color throughout its 166 pages, containing a fully-illustrated biographical essay on Stowitts (with many previously unpublished photographs) by Anne Holliday and an essay, a Primer if you will, on each of the 10 Mandala paintings (reproduced on full-color plates) and their significance within the Hidden Wisdom by this author.
In the meantime, enjoy the visual treat of the first trio of paintings we have included here and check back soon as we will be adding more images of the paintings.
